Today’s post is a bit of a reflection on how my karate training has changed me as an individual. There’s no doubting that, in the six years since I began training karate at my current dojo, the Jason who walks out of there today is not the same version of me as the one who walked out the very first time. Describing that change hasn’t been as cut-and-dry as I thought it would be, though.

If you have Netflix and even a slight love of food, you owe it to yourself to check out the Netflix original mini-series Samurai Gourmet. The show follows a newly-retired 60-year-old man as he explores the various bars and restaurants around him with new eyes.

At first blush, the show looks like it’s about food. I mean, it’s called Samurai Gourmet, after all. When you get beneath the surface a bit though, you realize that there’s way more going on here than you first realize. Here are three lessons from the show that go beyond food. (more…)


He was just another bum on the street. Homeless, drunk, crazy. At least, that’s how he would have appeared to outsiders. Sitting on a street corner spelling out ominous-looking words in coin, those who hurry by during their daily commute would think nothing of it. It was only when someone sat down to talk with the man, to understand what it was he was doing, that true understanding began to emerge. (more…)
