Hi, and welcome to my site! It’s a blog about personal finance and careers, told through the lens of my search for happiness and mindfulness in life. Why those things? Well, because most people view them as a necessarily evil to use in their pursuit of happiness in life… and I think they can be more than that!
I sit down at the dining room table together with my wife and friends, our laptops open in front of us. We’re at my friend’s parent’s country home for the weekend, and we’re there to work. Each of us has a written package to put together as part of our (shodan) black belt submission. (more…)
I’ve been reading a lot of non-fiction books lately. My list has included everything from martial arts books to photography guides, personal finance to creative writing. Eventually though, I noticed something: I wasn’t enjoying the books as much as I used to. Even more troubling: I wasn’t enjoying the act of reading as much as I used to. (more…)
If you’ve ever had a large amount of debt that wasn’t a mortgage, you probably know the feeling it gives you. That sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach, like there’s a ticking time bomb inside you that could go off at any moment. A common complaint I hear from a lot of people I talk to is that they wish they had traveled more when they were younger. What’s interesting is that this complaint comes from people of all ages, from 23 all the way up to 80. To all except some of those right at the top of that spectrum, I ask this question:

Imagine for a second that science succeeds in copying a person’s consciousness to a computer… and that person is you. Suddenly, you’re face-to-screen with an exact copy of yourself, complete with your exact personality and memories. From this moment on though, you start to diverge, and become your own separate “people.”

A while back, I wrote a post about five great plants for contemporary home designs. They were edgy, modern-looking plants that fit in well with the clean lines typically found in contemporary homes.
Being out in nature this past weekend really recharged my batteries, and it reminded me of how important greenery is to our sense of well-being. So today, I’ll give you some options for plants that fit nicely into a more traditional home design. (more…)
