What Could Your Junk be Worth on Kijiji?

My wife and I just moved into a new home. In preparation for the move, we took a close look at all of the bulky items we owned, and asked ourselves whether we still wanted/needed each item or not. After all, the less we take with us, the less costly the move, and the less cluttered our new home would be. Turns out, people are willing to pay pretty good money on Kijiji for a wide array of stuff! So what could your items be worth? I’ve crunched some numbers: let’s take a look.

Coffee Table: $100 – $300 CAD

Depending on the style and condition of your coffee table, you’ll be looking at anywhere from $100 (for a basic MDF) to $300 (for designer models) for your coffee table. We sold our solid wood coffee table for $180 after negotiations – not bad, considering we only paid $350 for it over 8 years ago!

Twin Bed with Mattress: $150 – $250 CAD

If you’ve got a twin bed frame and gently-used mattress that no longer serve any purpose in your house, you could be looking at around $200 to offload it to someone who can use it. In our case, we had two, and our full-grown guests would wake up complaining that their feet hung off the ends of the beds.

Oops.

Yeah, it was time to get rid of them and upgrade to a big-kid guest bed. Again, there’s good money to be made here in exchange for clearing out a significant amount of floor space!

Office Desk: $50 – $400 CAD

I know, I know… big range here. The reality, though, is that desks come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes. Most of what I see on Kijiji will go for $50 – $100, because most desks that are listed are basic in nature. A work surface, with maybe one or two drawers.

If you have an executive desk that you’re looking to offload, this is where you can command prices toward the higher end of the scale. People are willing to pay more for solid wood and more storage space.

Dresser: $50 – $200 CAD

If you have a dresser you’re looking to offload, expect to get anywhere from $50 to $200 for it. At the lower end of the spectrum, you’re looking at basic IKEA-style MDF furniture. At the upper end, you’d be looking at solid wood. These prices hold whether the dresser is upright, horizontal, or anything in between.

Dining Table with Chairs: $100 – $1,000 CAD

Again, a huge range listed here. That’s because dining tables coming in all manner of materials and sizes. At the low end of the spectrum, you’ve got glass and MDF 4-person tables. At the high end, you’re looking at solid wood tables and chairs that seat between 8 and 10 people.

Note: There are some fools out there who have their pieces listed for $2,000+…  I call them fools because there’s just no way anybody is going to pay that price on Kijiji. You can get a brand new designer-brand dining set for that price, so don’t go listing your set in that range… unless you want the listing to rot in the archives, that is 🙂

3-Seater Couch: $200 – $800 CAD

Depending on the material and condition your couch is in, you could be looking at anywhere between $200 (for a lightly-used upholstered couch) to $800 (for a near-perfect condition leather or other high-end material couch). Again, you get the odd deluded person who believes they can get $1,500 or more, but it’s just not going to happen. There are too many quality options on the site below the $1,000 mark for anyone to consider paying more than that for a used couch that carries no warranty.

Most of the couches I’ve seen go for between $200 and $500 CAD, which is still a nice chunk of change in exchange for offloading a piece of furniture you no longer want or need!

Wrapping it Up: Priceless

There’s more value to selling old furniture on Kijiji than just getting money in your pocket. In doing so, you don’t have to dispose of the items yourself, you save on moving costs, and you get the peace of mind that comes with a more open and tidy home.

And also the money in your pocket.

As you can see, selling off old furniture can easily net you a grand or more in total, so it’s well worth the little bit of effort it takes to snap a few photos and list your products for sale online!

Side Note: This post isn’t really about Kijiji, and I’m not being paid to write it. You can use any site you want ultimately; I just used Kijiji as my example because it’s one of the most well-known 🙂
